Fijians to bolster Magpies

Cowra’s dwindling player numbers are expected to be boosted this weekend with the arrival of four Fijians on sporting visas.

The new recruits are expected to touch down in Cowra tonight and make their run-on debuts for the Magpies in their round four trip to play the Orange Hawks at Wade Park on Sunday.

The arrivals come as a big boost for the struggling Magpies, who were humbled 76-0 by the red-hot Orange CYMS in Blayney last weekend.

Captain-coach Grant Burton said he was ecstatic at the news.

“(I’m) pretty chuffed. We need players at the moment. There is going to be some good footballers there.

“There’s two front-rowers, one winger and a centre. It will give us a bit of depth in the forward pack.

“We didn’t have any reserves last week, but that’s no excuse.”

Cowra president Peter Garlick began working on the idea of bringing imports to the club during the pre-season when numbers were low.

Now the challenge is for the Magpies to translate the positive off-field news into good performances on the park.

Burton said he will tell his side to forget about the 14-tries-to-nil loss to CYMS, and concentrate on CYMS’ cross-town rivals Hawks.

“It’s something we need to forget. I don’t think we’re that bad a team to be honest.

“We were missing a couple of blokes, but like I said, that was no excuse for the scoreline.”

Hawks have had problems of their own in the past two weeks, leaking 96 points in two games.

They let in 50 against CYMS in the Orange derby before a rampant Mudgee piled on 46 at Jubilee Oval.

Burton said his side will have to be switched on the trouble Ryan Prevett’s men.

“They beat St Pat’s, they’re going to be tough.

“They’ve ran into a couple of good sides the last couple of weeks but we’re definitely not going to be taking them lightly.”

Sunday’s first grade match is due to kick-off at 2pm.
